EMILY’S STORY V
Stuart’s deployment to Timor was also a deeply worrying time for Emily. ‘I didn’t want to believe that he was going to East Timor,’ she says. ‘I remember praying and saying to myself maybe things will change tomorrow. I was in absolute denial. When the day came, I put my brave face on, but deep inside I was very sad knowing that he might not come home.
‘Stuart had given me this brown envelope containing his will the night before his departure. I still take a deep breath remembering that brown envelope. For me it was especially difficult because I had no family that were close by. My family live all over the world and my in-laws live over on the east coast, so there was really no one I could turn to for support. The little that I would hear on the news was the only source of information.’
Much of the time she spent writing letters to Stuart. ‘They were precious moments,’ she says, and all the more so because she was unable to talk about his mission to anyone except other members of the SAS community, and even they were limited in what they could say. ‘We just learn to keep our mouths shut and for the obvious reason: the security of our loved ones,’ she says.
It would be months before Stuart returned, and when he came home something in him had changed. ‘At that time I didn’t realise what it was,’ she says. ‘But there was constant patrolling of the house, locking doors. Any noise was a major factor.’
